When and how you're compensated depends on the specific opportunity you participate in. Some will pay instantly online via PayPal, others will mail you a check, etc. Just remember, you'll always know the exact details up front, and you pick the ones you like. A "Focus Group" is a group of individuals selected and assembled by researchers to discuss and comment on, from personal experience, the topic that is the subject of the research. Just like surveys, you simply share your opinions and discuss them with others.
Each time you participate in a survey, focus group, or other paid opportunity, the particular company that is giving or sponsoring the opportunity is the one that will pay you.
